A South Beloit man murdered his father in front of his grandchildren and then killed himself, after a standoff with police early Sunday morning.
South Beloit Police say they were called to a residence in the 2200 block of Blackhawk Road at around 12:13 a.m. Sunday morning, after a woman called and said that her husband had fired a gun and was threatening. She also told police that her father-in-law and small children were located in a tent in the back yard.
Officers arrived on scene and made contact with a 38-year-old man in the front yard, but retreated to cover and called for assistance from the Rockton, Roscoe and Winnebago Police Departments.
Negotiators began speaking to the man, who eventually retreated inside of the house.
According to police, a short time later, he went out the back door walked around to the side yard with the gun pointed to his head. He then walked into a wooded area behind the house, where police heard him fire two shots. He then came back out in the open and shot himself in the head.
Police checked the rear yard and found two tents, one of which was occupied by two young children and a dead 64-year-old man with gunshot wounds to his upper body. The children, who were unhurt, were reunited with their mother.
