MedMar, a medical marijuana dispensary in Rockford, has received State approval for its facility and has opened for business.
The facility offers marijuana products for vaporization or smoking. They will also offer an assortment of medical cannabis products, including chocolates, gummies, granola bars and oil cartridges for vaporization.
The Illinois medical marijuana law lists 39 conditions and diseases that can qualify a patient to use medical marijuana, with a doctor’s recommendation and accompanying state paperwork. Those conditions include: rheumatoid arthritis, glaucoma, cancer, HIV/AIDS, Hepatitis C and multiple sclerosis.
MedMar officials say their patients have been getting recommendation letters from private practices, which qualify them to purchase medical marijuana, since local hospitals are not writing them.
Traci Gardner, a nurse for MedMar, says, “Hospitals are pretty regulated, and their policies are pretty strict. So we’re not fighting with them. We’re encouraging their patients to find a private physician that will write that letter of recommendation to the State,”
The dispensary is helping Stateliners find doctors who will write recommendation letters for those who qualify. Gardner says, “A lot of the physicians, because they do not understand (that) this isn’t a prescription per se, it’s a recommendation, are still learning how the laws are laying out. They’re sitting back and watching, but we’re seeing more and more physicians stepping up to the plate saying yes, I think I’m going to do this.”
MedMar is located off of Perryville, two miles from I-90 at 2696 McFarland Road. Their hours are Monday through Friday, 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. and noon to 5 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday.
