Mississippi man charged after killing boy, 9, while boarding school bus

LEE COUNTY, MS (18 NEWS) – A nine-year-old boy was killed while boarding a school bus in Mississippi on Wednesday morning.

Dalen Thomas, 9, was walking across a highway in northeast Mississippi when he was hit by the pickup at about 6:30 a.m. Wednesday, officials said.

Thomas was transported to the hospital and airlifted to LeBonheur Children’s Hospital in Memphis, TN where he died.

Hunter Newman, 22, was formally charged with one count of aggravated assault and his bond was set at $10,000.

The Baldwyn School District released the following statement:

“With the recent tragic accident, Baldwyn School District will be offering counseling in partnership with the Family Resource Center, Region III, and local ministers on site throughout the rest of the school week. The safety of our students will continue to be our number one priority. Our thoughts and prayers are extended to the family of this tragic accident,” said Assistant Superintendent Raymond Craven.

“The bus was properly stopped when a truck hit the student,” said Baldwyn School District Assistant Superintendent Raymond Craven. “We are asking for prayers for the family and for the school.”

Four students were on the bus at the time of the accident, MHP said.
