The number of Shigellosis cases in Winnebago County keeps climbing.
A Shigellosis Task Force confirmed 14 new cases just in the last week. The disease causes an upset stomach and a fever. Kids are especially vulnerable. Health officials say they don’t expect the rapidly spreading bug to slow down, despite schools letting out for summer vacation.
“As these kids come out of school, now they’re emptying into the Y programs and the Rockford Park District programs,” said Emergency Response Coordinator Theresa James.
James said the number one tip the task force is preaching to day cares, after school programs, and summer camps is to make sure kids wash their hands frequently.
