Fire officials say a mother and child were killed in an early morning house fire in Byron.
Firefighters got the call at around 6:35 a.m. to a house at 2020 Silverthorn Ave. When they arrived, they found heavy smoke coming from the home, and a man attempting CPR on a 3-year-old boy in the front yard.
He told firefighters that he was returning home when he saw smoke coming from the house. He rushed inside and found the 3-year-old boy, who he then took outside and attempted to revive. The boy was taken to Rockford Memorial Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
The boy’s mother was found dead in the living room.
Both the State Fire Marshal and State Police Crime Lab are on scene as is customary when a fire involves fatalities. No word yet on a possible cause, although the house did sustain significant smoke damage inside the home.
Officials say smoke detectors in the home were working.
