(CNN) — A man on a mission to mow lawns in all 50 states for veterans.
Rodney Smith Junior said he got the inspiration for the project several years ago when he says he was “searching for his purpose.”
His foundation “Raising Men Lawn Care Service,” that provides free lawn care to those who need help, also seeks to inspire young men and women to make a difference.
“We’re going to all fifty states. This is actually my sixth time going to all fifty states; driving to 48 and flying to Hawaii and Alaska,” Smith Jr. said.
Lawn groomer extraordinaire, Rodney Smith, touring the country again, one lawn at a time.
Though, this go around he’s putting officers to work.
“I said, ‘For the police officers what can I do?’ I said, ‘Make a lawn mower like a police car.’ I bought a light online and put it on. I was trying to figure out a way to light it. That’s when I got a power box with a cigar lighter. I spray painted it with some help from my friends and here we are,” Smith Jr. said.
Sometimes we have to protect and serve in many different ways.”
His tour begins in Alabama.
It will take him about a month to hit every state.
“What I’m trying to do for this tour in particular is bring communities together. I’m trying to let people know that the police are there to protect and serve them. There are so many good police officers out there,” Smith Jr. said.
His organization is called Raising Men Lawn Care Service.
It provides mentorship to young men and women while gifting the elderly, single moms and veterans with a well-groomed yard.
Officer Thomas Kelly on the Huntsville Police Department said, “if people can see that you’re people just like them then they are more apt to approach them or you’re more approachable to them.”
‘There are many ways to spread kindness and give back. My simple tool is with a lawn mower, and for this tour it’s a police lawn mower. I’m inviting officers to come out with me,” Smith Jr. said.
