Neighbors react after teen shot on Mulberry Street

News

Video shot shows the moment paramedics put a teenage boy inside an ambulance, Rockford Police say he was shot on Mulberry Street around 5:30 Monday evening.

“When I see the guy is on the ground, I see [another] guy shoot him three times,” said nearby neighbor Pablo Mendez.

The block of Mulberry between Miriam and Royal Avenues was taped off, Rockford Police say the preliminary investigation suggests a fight broke out between the victim and three other males.

“I come out running out here and I got really emotional,” said nearby neighbor Kimberly Martin. “I was crying asking the officers asking if the guy that got shot was okay.”

Investigators say the victim was shot multiple times, witnesses say the teens scattered quickly after the shooting.

“[One] guy is running this way, one is running that way,” said Mendez.”The guy is on the ground screaming ‘Help! Help!’.”

Police placed evidence markers as they canvassed the area, neighbors say it’s been some time since they experienced a scene like this.

“It’s been very peaceful here until right now,” said Martin.

“Little kids only like 17, man,” said Mendez. “It makes me sick because I got a son too.”

Rockford Police say the victim is in a local hospital suffering from life-threatening injuries. Investigators say the shooting doesn’t appear random as the suspects and the victim knew each other.
