Winnebago County has struck a deal to build a new, 675,000-square-foot distribution center for an as-yet-unnamed employer, which is expected to bring 200 jobs to the area.
Winnebago County Board Chairman Frank Haney says the expansion is exactly what the county needs to grow its tax base, which will, in turn, generate new revenue.
The new building will be constructed on Baxter Road east of I-39, next to the FedEx distribution center.
Haney says the developer, Quickstart 39, LLC has an agreement with an employer to move into the space when it’s finished, but the name of the employer hasn’t been officially released.
The $25 million project will create between 100-200 construction jobs and, once finished, will hire at least 75 new employees.
It will also move some employees from other Rockford-area facilities to the new space, without costing existing jobs.
Haney says it’s important to continue to bring new businesses and people into the county.
“We cannot just tax the people who are here, and the businesses that are here, more and more and more,” Haney said. “We want to grow our tax base through attracting and retaining talent, and through attracting and retaining businesses.”
Workers are expected to break ground on the new facility on June 1st.
