Relay for Life of Boone and Winnebago Counties takes place this Saturday, June 1, at the Boone County Fairgrounds. Relay for Life is the world’s largest fundraiser aimed at fighting cancer.
Organizers say this year’s cancer benefit is different than years past. For starters, both counties have decided to team up once again.
“Most of the residents in Boone County utilize the hospitals in Rockford,” said Kari Blasingame, Relay for Life. Blasingame says the American Cancer Society always pushes for local branches to use donor dollars in the wisest way possible.
Also, in this year’s silent auction, a set of 4 tickets is up for grabs to the Cardinals vs. Cubs July 22nd game at Wrigley Field.
“We have those tickets already in hand,” explained Jennifer Tobin-Tinch, organizer. “I’m sure they will be the big hit.”
Relay for Life of Boone and Winnebago counties will host a 5K for the first time, complete with glow-bands!
“Registration will start at 7 and the race itself will kick off at 8:30 right after it’s turned dark so everybody will be all glowing and everything,” said Tobin-Tinch.
A fire truck pull will happen on Saturday, as well. Groups of 10 will set out to pull a fire truck as far as possible.
