New crime statistics released by the FBI show Rockford had the highest violent crime rate of any large city in Illinois in 2016.

The city averaged nearly 17 violent crimes for every 1,000 residents last year. That’s up from 2015. Both Springfield and Chicago averaged more than 11 violent crimes for every 1,000 residents.

A ‘large city’ is defined as one with a population of 100,000 or more.

East St. Louis was the most violent crime prone small city, with more than 28 violent crimes per 1,000 residents.
