A bill, introduced in the Illinois House, would require the Illinois State Police to search an applicant’s social media accounts before allowing them to legally purchase and own guns.

Sponsored by Rep. Daniel Didech (D-59th District)  and Rep. Jonathan Caroll (D-57th District), HB0888 amends the Firearm Owners Identification Card Act.

Police would “conduct a search of the purchasers’ social media accounts available to the public to determine if there is any information that would disqualify the person from obtaining or require revocation of a currently valid Firearm Owner’s Identification Card.”

The bill would require anyone applying for a FOID card to turn over a list of every social media account they own to police..
