New Milford Fire Protection District’s held a swear in and wet down ceremony

News

New Milford’s Fire Protection District added a number of firefighters and some new equpiment to their ranks.  The Fire Protection District swore in a new class of recruits and promoted firefighters in a ceremony Saturday night.  Everyone attending the swear in also got a tour of the station, and a look at the equpiment firefighers use.  The fire district also showed their new ladder truck at the event, where they did a wet down, or blessed the truck.  The wet down is something fire departments have been doing as long as they’ve been around.

“It drives back from the 1800’s, when new horses or apparatus were purchased to fire houses. And that tradition is carried on through the fire service today”, Fire Chief Alan Carlson explained.

During the traditional wet down the fire crews hosed down the truck, then wiped it down, the chaplain blessed it, and then they completed the wet down by pushing it into the fire house.
