New Parking Ordinance Approved for Rockford’s Sablewood Drive

City leaders pass a measure many believe will help crack down on violence in a Rockford neighborhood.

The new ordinance means no vehicles can park on Sablewood Drive between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m. Sablewood has been the site of numerous shootings, and even a recent murder. If drivers don’t abide by the no-parking zone, they will be ticketed. Police Chief Dan O’Shea says this step will help the community in the long run.

“The overall goal is to get their residents to work with us to feel comfortable with calling us when people show up who don’t belong there,” said O’Shea. “Friends of friends of friends are just coming to party and cause problems in the neighborhood.  So, success for us is for a dramatic drop in calls for service in the area and a safer environment for the people who live there.”

Signage with the new regulations will be posted on Sablewood by the end of the month.
