New Winnebago County Courthouse security procedures put in place in the wake of layoffs at the Sheriff’s Department are off to a rough start.
Court officials say long lines Monday morning at the courthouse due to security impacted judges, lawyers, litigants and others.
The Sheriff’s Office replaced part-time security guards with patrol officers in order to implement at $4 million budget cut. With those came new procedures as well, including no longer allowing bags into the courthouse unless under special circumstances, which reportedly added to the confusion at the security checkpoint on Monday morning. An attorney also says that a separate entrance for attorneys is no longer operational.
