Shortly after 6p.m. Saturday evening, the Rock County Sheriff’s Department responded to a two vehicle head-on crash on W. State Highway 11 in Janesville.
On arrival officers found that a black Chevrolet Equinox and gray Volkswagen Jetta had collided. After investigation, officers learned that the black Chevrolet was driving westbound on Highway 11 and the gray Volkswagen was traveling eastbound.
The Volkswagen, driven by a 43 year old male from Janesville entered the westbound lane for undetermined reasons and collided with a 78 year old female of Footville WI., driving the black Chevrolet. W. State Highway 11 was closed for nearly two hours as Janesville fire and EMS performed extrication for both drivers.
The female driver was transported to Mercy Hospital and later died from her injuries. The male driver was also transported to Mercy Hospital and remains in critical condition. Blood samples have been taken from the male due to the severity of the crash, the results are pending.
Alcohol or drug use are unknown to be involved at this time. Both drivers were wearing seatbelts.
