Opening Statements for Belvidere Man Accused in Shooting Death of Giovanni Galicia

News

Prosecutors say Ricardo Garcia is a member of the Latin Kings gang. They allege he and two other men went out the night of November 30th, 2013, to find and kill members of their rival gang, the Surenos.

Three years later, Garcia is still facing two first-degree murder charges for the shooting death of Giovanni Galicia.

Prosecutors say Galicia and his friends were simply in the wrong place at the wrong time. They were parked in their car outside of an apartment complex. That’s when investigators say 3 men, including Garcia, pulled up to the victims and shot at them.

Prosecutors say Garcia didn’t fire, but played an important role in the shooting.

Galicia’s mother says although she passes no judgment on those who played a part in the death of her son, she at the very least says he deserves justice.

Garcia faces up to 60 years in prison.

One of his partners, Ricardo Figueroa, has already been convicted on first degree murder charges.

A third man, Anthony Perez, is still awaiting trial.
