It’s a sign summer cannot be too far away: Belvidere’s Summerfield Zoo has opened for the season, beginning this weekend.
The zoo offers a more personal experience for visitors, who can get closer to the animals than most zoos. There’s even a petting zoo. Some of the animals are rescue animals with many new additions this year.
“Well right now already we have finished a brand new arctic fox exhibit,” said Zoo Owner Rick Anderson. “We also have a brand new vervant monkey exhibit. We have new animals too, we have red kangaroos now, we have river otters later in the year, we expect to see wolf babies, hyena babies, ostrich babies.”
Some of the new exhibits are delayed because of rain this spring but should be done soon. The zoo is open Saturdays 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. and Sundays 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. Admission is 10 dollars for adults, eight for seniors and five for children.
