The Illinois State Police are warning about a new phone scam that is circulating throughout the state.

Victims have reported receiving a call from a number appearing to be a legitimate Illinois State Police (ISP) number that comes in the form of an automated message. The message claims the victim is under criminal investigation and requests they send $600.

ISP is informing the public that these calls are not coming from them. Victims should be wary of calls soliciting money regardless of the phone number the call is made from.

Scammers use a practice known as “caller ID spoofing” to make their numbers appear as legitimate organizations.

If you believe you have been a victim of this scam, call ISP at (815) 632-4010 to file a report.
