Last July, Chicago-Rockford International Airport was named the 22nd largest airport in the nation for air cargo volume. The growth is causing the airport to expand, meaning 500 more jobs for Stateline residents.
Cargo operator Pinnacle Logistics announced it’s hiring to handle the influx of incoming cargo at the airport.
The Texas based company says jobs will start at a pay of $14 an hour.
“Associates, part-time, permanent positions,” said Vice President of Operations at Pinnacle Logistics Peter Weir. “There’s opportunities for leads, supervisors, managers. There’s so much opportunity with this growth.”
Currently, Pinnacle has 235 on staff in Rockford. Weir adds the work isn’t meant to just be seasonal.
“You can have a career with us,” Weird said. “We’ve got many examples of people that have been with us a short period of time that have gone to be lead agents, supervisors and onto managers.”
Weir says easy access from I-90 and the efficiency of airport staff makes RFD a good place to do business.
“There’s many airport choices around the U.S.,” Weird said. “There’s many that I would refer to as ‘golden nuggets’. They’re the airports that are going to give you the most attention.”
The logistics company has called Rockford home since 2016. One of its partners is online retailing giant Amazon.
“We are a very business friendly airport,” said RFD executive director Mike Dunn. “We go out of our way to make sure that our customers, where it’s UPS or Pinnacle or Pinnacle’s customer or others, we go out of our way to make sure that it’s a good experience for them.”
Pinnacle says the Rockford airport is the best prepared airport in the Midwest and the ideal location to grow its business.
“Out here specifically, there aren’t many airports like our airport,” Mayor Tom McNamara said. “I mean, they grew 1,000 jobs in 2017 and nearly 1,000 jobs in 2018. They’re now well on their way to do that again this year.”
Pinnacle says it plans to have another wave of hirings in August, and then again in October.
