Officers from the Beloit Police Department and the Rock County Sheriff’s Office spent Thursday afternoon investigating areas near exit 185 in Beloit, where a chase started Wednesday night.
Police say a 32-year-old man was pursued by three Hispanic men in a blue Chrysler Pacifica, who eventually caught up to the victim and then shot him in the leg once he got out of his car.
Commander Troy Knudson say, “[The victim] said he was excited by the whole thing, a lot of adrenaline [was flowing through him]. He said he didn’t realize that he had been shot until he was going down the road, and noticed his leg was starting to hurt.”
The victim then parked his car at the intersection of US Highway 14 and East County Road MM in Janesville to call police. Knudson says the exact location of the shooting is still unknown.
He says, “Once [the suspects] started following [the victim], his main intent was simply to get away from them so he took several turns in his effort to lose them, and in the process, I think he became a little disoriented to exactly where he was at.”
The three suspects reportedly flashed gang signs at the victim. It’s unclear which signs were shown, but Knudson says gang activity is becoming a big problem in Beloit.
Last month 5-year-old Austin Ramos, Junior was murdered in a drive-by shooting that police believe to be gang related.
Knudson says, “Last year, we saw an increase in violence down in that area in the county, and as a result, we increased our patrol efforts down there, and I think based on what we have been seeing here lately, we’re going to be increasing our efforts again.”
