CEDARVILLE, Ill. (WTVO) - The small town of Cedarville was rocked by a weekend shooting that left two people dead and another hurt.
The killings happened early Sunday morning at the Cedar Inn Bar, at 4747 IL-26 in Freeport.
Police say they've arrested the man responsible.
As investigators try to piece together a motive, they say a social media feud may be what led to the slayings.
Just before 2 a.m. Sunday, an argument at the Cedar Inn bar escalated when a man allegedly opened fire.
The suspect, 23-year-old Devin Marcum, had been imprisoned for a prior case of aggravated assault and use of a deadly weapon, but had let out on bond one week before Sunday morning's shooting.
Marcum is charged with the murder of 35-year-old Kyle Tucker and 36-year-old Shaun Bradbury, and the attempted murder of 35-year-old Michael Steinhauser.
Steinhauser's family has started a GoFundMe page to help with medical costs, and write that he was shot in the neck, but the bullet missed "his vertebrae, traveled through his esophagus and came out."
"Factual evidence as to the crime, the motive, is still under investigation," Stephenson County Chief Deputy Mark Marti said at a press conference Monday morning.
Marti said, "We're aware of social media and that is part of our investigation into this matter," but would not elaborate further.
Of Marcum's relationship with his victims, Marti said, "He knew who they were."
Marcum left the bar after the shooting, but deputies caught him just a few hours later.
"We have a very good working relationship with the agencies around us. We work well together. We assist each other whenever possible. The case was handled very well," Marti said.
"The suspect in this matter, obviously, has been taken into custody and is no longer a threat to the public," he added. "As far as general safety tips, be aware of your surroundings and what is going on around you."
Friends and family of all three victims have started fundraising for funeral and medical expenses, respectively, on GoFundMe pages, which raised upwards of $10,000 in only a few hours.
