Police are warning the public about complaints of a phone scam targeting sex offenders.

According to the Winnebago County Sheriff’s Department, sex offenders are receiving calls from a person claiming to be a detective with the Federal Government Task Force in Winnebago County.

The caller claims that the offender’s DNA is not on file, and to avoid a warrant being issued for their arrest, a fee must be paid by credit card.

Police warn never to provide anyone with your personal credit card information.
