On National ‘Planning Your Vacation’ Day, the Rockford Area Convention and Visitors Bureau tweets about all the things to do in the Forest City — from visiting the Tinker Swiss Cottage, to catching a show at the Coronado.
The agency says you don’t necessarily need to fly somewhere for vacation, when there are plenty of options for “stay-cations” here in Rockford. With 42 forest preserves in Winnebago County alone, and Rockford having the largest wave pool in Illinois, staying here isn’t a bad idea.
“For the local residents who can’t get away, stay-cation are a great option. If you choose to take a couple hours off or a couple of days off, exploring with your family,” says RACVB CEO John Groh.
More than half of Americans fail to use all of their vacation days every year, creating a tock pile of 662 million unused vacation days every year. Lack of money for travel is one reason, which is why the CEO of the Visitors Bureau suggests taking those valuable vacation days here.
“(It’s) an opportunity for those individuals who do get away to be happier at work, happier in their personal relationships with their family and more importantly, more satisfied over all,” explained Groh.
“Go do something at one of our awesome Park District facilities,” adds Olympic Tavern’s Zak Rotello. “I really enjoy riding bikes and taking a run down our bike path. It’s always great cause it’s in my neighborhood, gets me right to downtown as well. I could stop to grab a bite to eat or a beer somewhere.”
