Demonstrators took to the streets in Rockford to bring attention back to the case of a man shot and killed by two security guards.
The rally took place outside the Public Safety Building downtown on Tuesday afternoon. Community activists demanded justice for Jovan Fresco. In April 2016, Metro Security Guards Ryan Mattingly and Alijon Khalil got into a fight with Fresco near Auburn Manor. During the fight, Mattingly shot Fresco. Investigators say Fresco was armed with a gun as well. Demonstrators say the two must be held accountable.
“When we talk about justice for Jovan, it’s bigger than him,” said Bryant Moore, community activist. “If they don’t do something about this case, then next week we’ll have another Jovan and then the week after that we’ll have another Jovan. It’ll keep going if no accountability is held.”
Both Mattingly and Khalil have pleaded not guilty to murder charges. They’re scheduled to appear in court at 3pm Wednesday.
