Illinois Governor Bruce Rauner won a hard fought victory Tuesday over his opponent, State Representative Jeanne Ives, in the gubernatorial primary. The incumbent will now face JB Pritzker in the November 6th general election.

Rauner’s campaign was geared toward a rebuke of the speaker of the Illinois House of Representatives, Mike Madigan, and promoting his own agenda that is pro-growth, pro-job creation, pro-taxpayer and pro-term limits on elected officials.

Rauner had alienated a portion of his Republican base with his signing of House Bill 40 in September, which expanded public funding of abortion in Illinois, and also for signing of the Illinois TRUST Act in August, which limits cooperation with federal immigration officials, something members of his own party say creates a “sanctuary state.”
