Local leaders challenged area youth and adults to up their reading game through the Read 815 program, which aims to have every member of the community – especially kids – read a book every week between now and the start of the school year.
Organizers say literacy is critical to the region’s long-term success, impacting everything from quality of life to the ability to attract business.
Winnebago County Board Chairman Frank Haney says this year’s challenge is just the start.
“You don’t build a culture in 7 or 8 weeks, but we can certainly have a great kick off,” Haney said. “We have a bunch of talented kids. We need to meet their potential, long-term, and we have a role to play in promoting reading.”
Haney added that it’s up to everyone, not just parents, to help to build a culture of reading.
