Relay For Life To Honor One of its Best Volunteers

Friday marks the annual Relay For Life event and this year they are honoring a special volunteer.

Donn Frederick is 85 years old and he started volunteering for the American Cancer Road to Recovery program after his wife passed away in 2010.  He’s donated his car and time, driving 1000 trips with cancer patients.

“It was more important that I did it for the people that needed it,” said Frederick.

A dedication and kindness that will be recognized Friday, June 17th.  Although, it’s not the only type of volunteering he does.

“I started there first because that I could do.  The other thing I wanted to do was work for Northern Illinois Hospice because they took care of my wife when she was dying.”

Other volunteers say it’s inspiring to be able to help those in need and are happy the event raises awareness on the need for volunteers.

“We’re always looking for volunteers,” said Bruce Nelson, a volunteer driver.  “We have a need for it and it’s very gratifying.”
