Rep. John Cabello (R) defeats Tricia Sweeney (D) in the Illinois House’s 68th District race.

Cabello’s victory is not much of a surprise.  A poll commissioned by the Illinois Observer indicated he had a 23% lead coming into Tuesday.

He’ll continue a political career that’s seen some successes, including being named to lead the House Republican Organization, by House Minority Leader Jim Durkin.  The group helps coordinate House GOP campaigns.

Sweeney, the former marketing director at Rock Valley College, ran as a democrat.  But, in an interview with Eyewitness News, she vowed to conduct her prospective term in office as an independent.

Cabello’s run first started in 2012 when Dave Winters resigned and Cabello was appointed to take his place.  Cabello then defeated former Rockford Alderman Carl Wasco (D).  In 2014, he ran unopposed.
