Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan released the preliminary findings of an ongoing investigation on Wednesday which revealed that Catholic Church officials knowingly withheld the names of at least 500 priests accused of sexual misconduct.

Madigan’s report states that the Church has “failed in its moral obligation to provide survivors, parishioners and the public a complete and accurate accounting of all sexually inappropriate behavior involving priests in Illinois.”

This comes shortly after Catholic Church officials, including those at the Rockford Diocese, have touted their new transparency by providing updated lists of priest accused of sexual abuse.

The investigation by Madigan’s office began in August, following the release of a Pennsylvania grand jury report of large scale child sexual abuse in that state. Some of the accused priests had connections to Illinois dioceses.
