The Rockford Housing Authority cuts the ribbon on a controversial east side housing complex.
It held a ceremony Thursday morning at the Grove on South New Towne. It boasts 49 apartment units. Most people moved in during the summer. Despite nearby residents’ concerns about public safety and property values dropping, the RHA says none of that will come to pass.
“Watch us work,” said RHA CEO Larry Williams. “Give us an opportunity to show that people are people, no matter where they live. Watch them build themselves a pathway out of poverty over the next few years.”
The Grove is just part of a five year plan for the RHA. It aims to replace or renovate nearly 400 units across the city.
