Rockford Christian students dress in blue, raise $3,000 for family of slain deputy

Students from Rockford Christian dressed in blue on Tuesday to show support for the family of Deputy Jacob Keltner.

The event was part of the school’s “Casual for a Cause” program. Students were allowed to come to school out of uniform in exchange for a donation.

Students also signed a banner that will be displayed at Deputy Keltner’s funeral on Wednesday.

School leaders say it gives students an important life lesson, while honoring those who keep them safe.

“We want them to be better members of the community, and that means reaching out when there’s a need,” said Principal Drew Popejoy. “That means paying attention to the world around them. Nothing can replace a husband, a father, a co-worker, but we wanted to make sure the family knew we were thinking of them, that our prayers are with them.”

In all, students raised $3,000 for Deputy Keltner’s family.
