A local church celebrated their 100 Year Anniversary today.
Pilgrim Baptist Church on South Central Avenue has been holding service since 1917. For about half that time, a large mural has graced the front of the church. It was created from dozens of small tiles back in the late 60’s.
Rockford resident Jack Derosso, who helped put the mural together, was invited back to the church for the big celebration. He says it means a lot to him that the mural is still there.
“50 years ago I installed it and it’s still up there,” he said. “And it’s just a sign, to let people know, that Jesus is still living out there in this church.”
Of those that helped build the mural, Derosso is the only contributor still alive today.
