Rockford Church Removes Black Lives Matter Banner in Wake of Officer’s Death

News

The Unitarian Universalist Church pulled down a Black Lives Matter banner near the site of the incident which resulted in Officer Jaimie Cox’s death.

The banner typically hangs on the side of the building.  With emotions running so high following Officer Jaimie Cox’s death, both the Rockford Police Department and his family requested that they take it down for Monday night’s vigil.  The church agreed.

“We know there’s controversy,” said Rev. Dr. Matthew Johnson.  “That’s a larger conversation [for another time.]  We’re here to express our love and compassion for each other.  So, we’ll take [the banner] down and put it back up later this week.  [We want] to be in the right relationship with the people who send their loved ones off to do duty for the city.”
