37-year-old Danuel Schumacher, of Rockford, was arrested by police on Friday as he allegedly tried to steal “more than a thousand dollars” worth of merchandise from Walmart — while police officers and Rockford firefighters were conducting their “Battle of the Bells” fundraising drive for the Salvation Army, outside.

Police say Schumacher tried to steal the items around 10:20 a.m. from the Walmart at 3859 Northridge Drive.

When an officer confronted him, he fled and was chased down by police.

He is charged with Felony Retail Theft and Resisting/Obstructing an Officer.

“While officers were volunteering for a noteworthy cause, they were quickly reminded of how important it is to remain ever-vigilant,” said Assistant Deputy Chief Carla Redd. “I am very grateful for the dedication the officers show to the community on a daily basis.”

Schumacher was taken to the Winnebago County Jail.
