Last nights victory at Wrigley Field was a moment Cubs fans around the nation have waited for their entire lives to see. The Cubs after seventy one years of never winning a pennant, finally clinched their spot to the World Series. The Friendly Confines and Chicago erupted in celebration. Here in Rockford, fans celebrated by grabbing whatever merchandise they could to represent the red and blue.
Local Cubs fan Jim Ekstrom and others flocked to the local Dicks Sporting Goods for materials. “We’re trying to find a flag, getting my World Series hat, and shirts if I can find them to fit my petite frame, and a World Series shirt too” Ekstrom explained. “We’re here to get the shirts, the sweatshirts, just support the team” said Rockford native Christy Fulton with her husband Chad.
Some fans at Dicks were even at the game the night before trying to bring home some mementos. “It was fantastic, it was one of the best baseball games I ever went to, no, it was the best game I ever went to” said John Tresemer who was there with his brother-in-law Denny Helgeson.
Fans are still in awe at what the Cubbies achieved, bringing tears to longtime fan Lesly Pavlas. “I’m from the Chicago suburbs and went to the games all the time as a kid. My dad always took me to Wrigley, Wrigleyville is fantastic! I’m just so excited, I’ve been waiting my whole life for this. It’s just been so fun watching the games this year, they’ve been so fun to watch” Pavlas says holding back tears of joy.
