Rockford Diocese releases names of priests accused of sexual abuse

ROCKFORD, Ill. - On Wednesday, the Catholic Diocese of Rockford released a list of 15 priests and other clergy who have been accused of sexual abuse.

The list includes the names of six priests, one permanent deacon and seven religious order priests and one religious order brother who served for a time in the Diocese of Rockford.

In a statement, Bishop David Malloy said the Diocese had examined its files dating back to 1950 and found allegations, of sexual abuse of a minor, had been substantiated against three priests between 1950 and 2002.

The names included in Wednesday's report date back to the establishment of the Rockford Diocese in 1908.

Bishop Malloy's decision to release the names publicly comes as many dioceses in the United States have decided to disclose a list of priests by name, against whom substantiated allegations have been reported.

In 2004, a report issued by Bishop Thomas Doran revealed there were three priests in the Rockford diocese who had been removed from the ministry due to sexual assault claims, but they were not named.

In the statement, Malloy said, "The people of the Diocese can be assured that those clergy members who are ministering to them today in their parishes and schools and other diocesan facilities are doing so according to the Diocese’s strict standards of pastoral and moral conduct."
