Rockford files emergency injunction to prevent Essex owner from selling property

News

The City of Rockford says the owner of the dilapidated Essex Wire property on N. Main Street tried to sell it in the midst of a court battle.

The City is suing owner Paul Bennett, of A.W. Bennett, for failing to demolish and clean up the site after multiple chances to do so.

At a court hearing on Thursday, city attorneys learned that Bennett was trying to transfer the property to a new owner to avoid paying a $200,000 fine.

The attorneys filed a motion to prevent that from happening. The motion was granted by a judge.

The move stops Bennett from being able to sell the property for less than $200,000.

Bennett and his company are still on the hook for that fine.
