Rockford firefighters attempted to make one neighborhood feel a little safer this afternoon as they went door to door to install smoke alarms and conduct home safety surveys.
The Rockford Fire Department undertook the initiative in the neighborhood of Winnebago and Maple Streets, in response to a deadly fire last week that claimed the life of a 1-year-old child.
Ila Vanhauen, a neighbor, says that the fire department going out like this helps more than some know. “It actually does a lot, you know? Because, like me, I don’t have a vehicle or anything, so with them coming out and doing that, it does sort of help, even with the older people who can’t get out and get batteries, or don’t have anyone to check them.”
The Rockford Fire Department routinely does similar visits to neighborhoods throughout the city in the aftermath of significant fires.
