Rockford Fire Department Installs Free Smoke Detectors for Residents

The Rockford Fire Department got some help in preventing fires. Firefighters went door to door in neighborhoods across the city.

They offered to give residents a smoke alarm and install it for free.

Home fires are the majority of disasters that the Red Cross responds to.

Across the U.S., 7 people die every day from one.

Red Cross Executive Director Lisa LaSala’s family lost a home to a fire.

It’s a mission near and dear to her heart that families have working fire detectors.

“You typically only have about two minutes to escape a fire from your home,” said LaSala. “So we’re also going to educate the homeowners on making a safety plan and an escape plan to get out of the home safely.”

She says the Red Cross will stand by our community in need, and not just help in cases of tornados, and flooding, but also in fires.
