Local fire investigators bring on a best friend as a new way to track down arsonists.
That best friend has four paws, a tail, and most importantly, a very sensitive nose. Ava, a 2 year-old yellow Labrador, is a trained arson dog. She can sniff out possible ignitable liquids humans can’t.
“These canines have an ability to identify odors that we can’t smell,” said Illinois Fire Investigator Greg Castronovo. “We can all smell ignitable liquids such as gas or diesel, but in very small amounts it would be difficult to smell those.”
Each dog costs $25,000 to train. The entire bill was picked up by State Farm Insurance. There are now seven of these dogs in Illinois.
