Rockford firefighters reunited with people they saved

News

Friday marks the tenth annual “Survivor Event” hosted by the Rockford Fire Department. It’s a chance for survivors to thanks the fire crews who provided life saving measures to them.

Often we think of firefighters as being solely focused on extinguishing fires-whether it be a house fire, car accident, or containing a hazardous material spill.

But at the Rockford Fire Department they’re cross-trained to be both firefighters and paramedics. In fact, 80 percent of the department’s calls last year were for emergency medical service.

Think of how many accidents you’ve seen where a fire truck is first to arrive.

Lt. Trent Brass said, “Part of it’s just having the right personality just to handle the call without overreacting to it, and just providing the best care with things.” He says it’s no surprise that firefighters have a unique mindset.
