Rockford gang member arrested for possession of handgun, marijuana

A Rockford gang member has been arrested after police found a handgun and marijuana during a traffic stop.

Members of the Rockford Police Housing Authority Unit were on patrol in the 1000 block of Hess Court in the Fairgrounds Valley Housing Development on Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. when they stopped a vehicle for a traffic violation.

A Rockford Police K9 officer was called in to assist. 

The passenger, 23-year-old Rockford resident Trashone Townsend was charged with Aggravated Unlawful Use of a Weapon, Unlawful Use of a Weapon by a Felon, Unlawful Possession of a Firearm by a Street Gang Member, Possession of Cannabis and no FOID card. 

Townsend was arrested and taken to the Winnebago County Jail.

The driver, 29-year-old Lashaun Lashey of Chicago was found to be in possession of a small quantity of marijuana and was given a citation for possession of marijuana and disobeying a stop sign. Lashey was released from the scene.
