A Rockford homeless man was in court Thursday on charges he murdered another homeless man.

Harry Lawrence, 46, is accused of killing Jerry Johnston back in June.  He’s currently being held in the Winnebago County Jail on no bond.

Johnston was found dead on the second floor of an abandoned building on S. Main St. near Morgan last month.  An autopsy revealed he died from blunt force trauma to the neck and chest.  Police arrested Lawrence two days after the murder.

Lawrence was supposed to be arraigned Thursday, but his attorney asked for a new judge.  The case now goes to Chief Judge Joseph McGraw to assign a new judge to the cast.

Editor’s note:  The story has been corrected to reflect the fact that Lawrence requested a new judge.
