A few IceHogs took a break from the ice on Wednesday to present a special gift to a local boy fighting a rare disease.

Students at Shirland Grade School came together to raise money to help with 11-year-old Brock Scarpetta’s fight against Batten’s Disease, a disorder of the nervous system, with a little help from a few players from the Rockford IceHogs, who surprised Brock with a $2,000 check.

“We thought it would be really cool to bring some guys out her, congradulate the kids, and then make a monetary donation as well,” said Mike Peck, the Rockford IceHogs Director of Business Operations. “But it’s really about Brock and the students here, and what they’ve done for him.”

The IceHogs stuck around after the event to take photos and play a little dodgeball with the Shirland students.
