A Rockford man is now in custody on weapon charges.

On March 24th, around 6:15 a.m., police arrived to the 700 block of Lexington Avenue in response to a fight. Upon arrival, they learned a man — possibly armed — left the residence before they arrived.

A short time later, a man matching the suspect’s description was seen on the 300 block of Waveland Avenue walking with two other men.

Police say officers detained all three men and learned that a suspect, later identified as Demetrius Patterson, 35,  had possibly discarded an object in front of the residence on Waveland. They recovered a bag with a handgun and several rounds of ammunition.

Patterson was charged with Unlawful Use of Weapons by a Felon and Violation of the Firearm Owner’s Identification Card Act.

Patterson was lodged in the Winnebago County Jail.
