Rockford native to present at the Annual Conference of Illinois History

What started out as a hobby in kindergarten has turned into a career for Rockford native, Jason Marcus Waak. He joins Eyewitness News Anchors Jay Leonardi and Emily Waldron on set to discuss his upcoming presentation on Chicagoland Naval History at the Annual Conference of Illinois History.

As the current historian for the University of Illinois at Chicago, Waak’s goal in presenting at the conference is to inform attendees, about the deep connection between the Navy and the Chicagoland area.

Topics include the names of popular airports, O’Hare and Midway, which were named after a naval hero and a battle respectively, and the German U-505 Submarine that is a popular attraction at the Museum of Science and Industry in Downtown Chicago.

Waak will be joined by retired 3-star (Vice-Admiral) Ann Rondeau, current President of the College of DuPage and former Commander, Naval Service Training Command, Great Lakes and history professor Commander David Kohnen of the Naval War College.

For more information on the Annual Conference of Illinois History, and Chicagoland Naval History, Waak is working on a website. Check for updates.
