Rockford Officer Jaimie Cox’s death ruled a homicide by jury

The death of Rockford Police Officer Jaimie Cox was ruled a homicide by a coroner’s inquest jury on Thursday morning.

A jury of five determined that the actions of Eddie Patterson led to Cox’s death.

The investigation revealed that Patterson had used a false name during the November 5th traffic stop. It was determined that Patterson accelerated with Cox caught in the door of his pickup truck while Cox was attempting to restrain him.

Evidence collected at the scene showed that Cox was inside the vehicle, trying to stop it. His DNA was found on the gearshift lever.

Patterson’s truck was traveling 58 mph at the time of the impact with a tree.
