The Rockford Police Department and local McDonald’s are teaming up to offer free backpacks to children enrolled in kindergarten through 6th grade.

The first giveaway will be held at Living Faith Tabernacle Annex, 1124 4th Avenue, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and the second will run from 4 to 6 p.m. at Rockford Police District 1, 1045 W. State Street.

“This time of year is pretty expensive for families,” said Officer Jesse Washington. “The PB&PA and Bear Family McDonald’s wanted to assist them and defer some of the costs.”

In total, about 400 backpacks will be handed out. Each backpack is stuffed with supplies, including a notebook, folder, pencils, glue sticks and pencil box. Children must be present at the time to receive backpacks.
