The Rockford Police Department is issuing a scam warning, about people soliciting donations over the phone pretending to represent them.

Police say the solicitors are asking for donations for the Rockford Police Benevolent and Protective Association (PBPA) Unit 6.  What’s worse, the say the callers may be “spoofing” phone numbers to appear to be from the Rockford Police Department to add to their legitimacy, and they say the callers have also been very persistent asking for donations.

Officials remind people that the Rockford Police Department does not solicit funds of any kind over the phone and PBPA Unit 6 is not currently soliciting any donations.

Anyone receiving phone calls from someone claiming to be from the Rockford Police Department, or representing PBPA Unit #6, and asking for donations by phone is asked to note the name and phone number from which the call is received, and report the call to the police non-emergency number at 815-966-2900.
