Rockford Police name officer who opened fire on car after being struck

The Rockford Police Department is releasing the name of the officer who opened fire on a suspect vehicle that rammed her car as Assistant Deputy Chief Carla Redd.

Redd is a 20-year veteran of the department.

The incident happened just before 6:30pm on January 20th in the area of 8th Street and 5th Avenue.

Investigators say the suspect rammed the officer’s car with their own car.  Afterward, Redd fired her weapon at the suspect vehicle.

Redd was taken to the hospital as a precaution.  There are no known injuries at this time.

The Winnebago Boone County Integrity Task Force is now investigating the officer’s use of a weapon.
